What is a GTIN-8 or EAN-8?

GTIN-8 is an eight-digit Global Trade Item Number. The term EAN-8 is commonly used for the barcode symbol that carries it. GS1 reserves this shorter format for small retail items where a full EAN-13 symbol would not fit reliably.

When should you use GTIN-8?

GTIN-8 is not a shortened version of an existing EAN-13. It must be allocated through the relevant GS1 organisation when packaging space is genuinely limited. For normal consumer packaging, GTIN-13 is the more common format.

What does this GTIN-8 check verify?
